Short course: democracies are nothing more than mob rule. Republics are based on laws and order. The United States was formed as a Republic. When asked what form of government we'd been given, Benjamin Franklin famously replied, "A Republic, if you can keep it!"
As Jefferson put it, the purpose of a republic is to “bind men down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.” The ballot box alone cannot bind a President to the will of the people. It is the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the other two branches of government which hold down the Presidency from becoming a monarchy or dictatorship.

"One fundamental principle of a constitutional republic is the protection of minority rights against the potential tyranny of the majority. This design counters direct democracy, where majority rules could potentially ride roughshod over minority interests". Our republic is still the best form of government ever devised by man. It’s time for Americans everywhere to stand up and say, “This is a Republic, not a Democracy. Let’s keep it that way!”
When I hear anyone, teachers, politicians, reporters, etc. refer to saving our "democracy" I realize they are uninformed and spreading a lie. It is like fingernails on a blackboard to me.
