Historically the term was used to describe a defensive maneuver which was employed by Americans in the 19th century. The term has evolved colloquially to mean people defending each other.
Animals make this circle to protect the young, weak, sick and feeble by having them near the center of the circle. The pioneers learned to circle the wagons when being attacked or when they wanted the safety of camping overnight.
